Anatomy of Effective Ad Design

Creating an effective ad design comes down to four key components. These components, when used together, will enhance any ads success and purpose.

Component 1: Strong Headline

The Headline of your ad will be the first component to draw in readership. This headline should be big, BOLD, and powerful. A headline used correctly will do one of the following:

  • It will provide a solution or answer a question
  • Highlight a benefit or special offer
  • Create interest drawing the viewer in, leaving them wanting more

Component 2: The Body Copy

More often than not, you will find advertisers placing as much body copy as they can fit, which is a very common mistake to make when creating any ad. This can send mixed messages and will leave viewers uninterested. An effective ad will use a limited amount of body copy. This copy should focus on key points or elements to inform readers of your ads message.

Component 3: Visual Design Elements

It is very important that the visual design elements will reflect your ads message. These visual elements can include a high-resolution image or illustration.  At times, typography can serve as the main visual design element, such as the body copy. But keep in mind that the layout of your ad will also make or break the direct attention for which you want your viewers to be drawn to.

Component 4: Call to Action

It is important for any ad to have a call to action. Its purpose is to inform the reader of what you wish for them to do, without physically saying it. Do you want them to check out your website, call for information, place an order etc.  Including a simple call out will encourage readers to make an action.
